Anyone know anything about juicing and body building

Hello all im new to juicing i would love to get the benefits from juicing.
Well i would like to continue weight lifting but i would like to know what juicing recipes will i need to help my energy and keep my muscle mass. I wouldnt mind doing a only juice diet if i can keep my muscle mass i do have plenty body fat i would love to get rid of im a 42yr Male 250lbs 6ft tall.

I would love to hear some answers to this from people who know something. I just started a 7 day juice fast, mostly to try to shrink my stomach a little and control hunger pangs when I move on to a more traditional, whole foods restricted calorie diet. I'm kind of an avid body builder myself but thanks to my diet (too many sweets in between my healthy meals) I, too, have too much fat. I was kind of assuming that the juice fast would be a really temporary way to kick start my fat loss program since I'm not sure I can maintain the energy that I need to work out and lift weights at the level I normally do. We'll see, though, as the week goes on...

Hi Laura,

Doing your regular workout during a fast is probably not a good idea. Unless you select the foods you juice very carefully you probably are not getting enough calories or protein to be able to sustain heavy workouts.

As far as long term and staving off the inappropriate snacks, have you ever investigated the McDougall "starch Solution"?

If you do want to work out or lift weights and maintain your muscle mass there are two viable options that you should consider.

1. Do the juice fast but add a light meal for dinner consisting of fresh veggies and a protein such as chicken breast, steak, tuna, etc. Keep your meals small if your goal is to lose weight. This way you still get the nutritional value of juicing while also getting more protein and carbs.

2. Do the juice fast and add pure unflavored protein isolate to your drinks. This will up your protein and help keep your muscle mass.

Remember, during a fast you are limiting your calories, protein, and carbs. So any prolonged physical activity will burn extra calories and possibly muscle mass if you don't add the necessary protein to sustain that muscle mass. Hope this helps.

Another option is to juice high protein vegetables. For instance, broccoli gets 20% of its calories from protein. 85 grams of broccoli has 2.5 grams of protein.

Kale, spinach, and romaine lettuce are also high in protein. Look at the Green Giant Juice Recipe, it has around 16g of protein and would be a good option.

My second day juicing and i already feel the headaches and the moodiness, and i guess the greens are the reason im on the bowl so much. But thats a small thing to a Giant like myself. Thanks guys.....

I'm glad to see others are also concerned about protein during a juice fast. I'm on day 7 of my first 10-day juice fast. I'm enjoying it and want to continue it, but feel like adding some form of protein might be important. The info in this thread is very helpful, thanks. I love broccoli so adding that will be the easiest for me, and I see natural vegan protein powder in my future too.

I was thinking I might add a couple ounces of protein-rich almonds. Of course, it wouldn't be a pure fast anymore but I don't care. Does that sound like it might work?

Still not sure why you feel you need more protein. Do you lift weights or are you trying to build more muscle? If that's the case then yes, some protein would be a good idea.

Excellent idea to include as many protein veggies as possible. You might notice that you aren't losing as much weight or weight at all. What happens is that when you workout you are building muscle mass. Lean muscle weighs more than fat. So while the scale may not move rest assured that you are still losing fat, but building muscle. As always, judge by how your clothes fit and how you feel.

Thanks JOJ u have clarified something that i was going to ask.....i have been juicing for 19days and today marks my 20th day and i have only lost 17.63lbs while some fast for 14 days and they loose more...even you JOJ you first did a 14 days Juice fast and you lost 20lbs ......so now i know because i walk/jog 7kms 5 times a week from Monday to Friday......Thanks JOJ at least i know my scale reading shouldn't fool me i am still loosing that fat.....and cloths are way too loose and the ones that didn't fit now fit me perfectly..................yeeeepyyyy
