Juicing 101

Juicing 101Juicing 101

Juicing 101! If you are thinking about juicing to add some healthy options to your diet, but not sure where to begin, keep in mind that it doesn’t need be overwhelming or confusing.  In fact, it should be quite the opposite.

First, ask yourself this question:  “What is my goal?”  Your answer may include the following:

  • Increased energy
  • Healthier lifestyle
  • Weight management

Juicing 101! By following a program where you are providing your body with the freshest and most natural foods, you will discover an increased energy level and an overall better and healthier lifestyle. As a weight loss method, juicing can be very effective because vegetables and fruits are naturally lower in calories – yet high in vitamins and minerals.

Here are just a few of the benefits:

Juicing 101! Juicing nourishes our body with vitamin rich foods that no store bought juice can provide. Think of this as a lifestyle boost that will not only assist in weight loss, it’s also a delicious way to get in all of your daily vegetables and fruit requirements.  Did you know that the average American gets less than one-fifth of their recommend three fruits and five servings of vegetables a day?  Amazing, but true.

So here is some advice for those who want to add juicing to their lifestyle:

Juicing 101 Tip 1. Keep it simple:

In the beginning, keep it simple and don’t try combining several fruits and vegetables at once.  There could be a possibility that you may not like an end result and swear off juicing for good.  Instead, try a few of your favorite fruits together.  Do the same with vegetables. Once you feel comfortable with the process, then start mixing it up.

Juicing 101 Tip 2.  Add apples to sweeten:

When you are adding vegetables to your juicer, sometimes you may only taste the rawness, which is not appealing to everyone.  Instead, add an apple or carrot to sweeten the juice.

Juicing 101 Tip 3.  Vary your tastes:

Juicing 101! It’s not fun to eat the same thing day after day, and the same applies with juicing.  There are too many wonderful recipes out there to try.  Not only that, your body needs a variety of minerals and nutrients so change it up. Add a different ingredient every time you juice.

Juicing 101 Tip 4.  Prepare:

Like anything else, juicing is easy when you are prepared.  Wash and cut your veggies and fruit and store in refrigerator so produce is always ready when you are craving a healthy drink.  Overall, juicing should take only a matter of minutes from start to finish.

Juicing is not only easy, but enough cannot be said about the overall health benefits and transformation that can occur within your body.  You will feel better and lighter as well as more energized.

It’s never too late to start. I hope you enjoyed this article on juicing, Juicing 101!

  14. Hi I am planning on starting a juice cleanse but I have a busy schedule and find that it would be easier to make the juices in advance and keep them in my fridge. Will they still work for weight loss or does the juice need to be made fresh?

  15. I just want to say I am very new to blogs and absolutely liked this web page. Almost certainly I’m want to bookmark your blog post . You absolutely come with amazing posts. Kudos for sharing with us your blog.

  16. Hi, I want to start a juice diet but am really mixed up about the type of juicer. Can nutri bullet work for this and is it true that we should filter out the pump in the juice.

  17. I have the Jack LaLanne’s juicer and I have noticed it is hard to put kale and spinach in it.. any tricks that I don’t know about to make it work. Should I put them trough with a cucumber

    • Amanda, try rolling up your spinach into a tightly packed ball and running it through your juicer. Same with the Kale, roll it up nice and tight. The LaLanne juicer doesn’t do it’s best with leafy greens. Always run your cucumber through last to help push out any juices remaining in the juicer. Keep me posted on how it goes.

  18. I just finished reading 21 lbs in 21 Days and I was super excited about the detox plan however Dr Roni never listed any of the recipes for juicing in her book (odd I thought since she was promoting juicing) Anyway I am so excited that I found your website and the super simple juicing recipes. I’m starting on Monday…going to try for 30 days….got about that in pounds to lose and I figure it’s only 9 more days than the book says. Wish me luck!!!

    • Rena, congrats for getting ready to start your juice fast! I wish you all the best! Keep me posted and know that I’m here if you have any questions.

  19. Hi everyone im new at this juice cleansing, i really need to loose weight! im planning to start after 3 days. can anyone give me a simple recipe for morning lunch and dinner? Id appreciate all your help guys!

  20. I am five four, i am 130lbs and young, i am trying to get to 115lbs and i have tried working out and diet pills and drops and it is so hard to get rid of all that weight,do you think that actually going on a juice diet will really help me to lose all the weight that i am fighting to lose?, and how long will i have to be on this juice diet?.
Another thing is that i live in Jamaica so i am not sure that all of the vegetables and fruits i will be able to get, that is if there are special fruits and vegetables on this diet.:-)

    • Jay, welcome to JOJ and congrats on deciding to do a juice fast. Please read through the forums and see how many other people have succeeded on their juice fasts. I don’t see why you would be any different. Don’t look at it as “how long do I have to be on it”. Look at it as “I’m going to juice and incorporate it into my lifestyle”. If you just go back to your old eating habits after your fast you’re going to gain your weight back. Take a look at the substitution list if you can’t find certain fruits and vegetables. http://www.justonjuice.com/juicing-substitution-list/

I’m here if you have any questions Jay.

  21. I need to lose weight and a co worker has lost weight by juicing. I’ve decided to try it and found your website online. Good stuff in here Donnie. QUESTION: since I’m a beginner, and you suggest “keeping it simple” in the beginning by not using a big selection of fruit and veggies, are the 16 recipes posted on this site for beginners or advanced juicers? What simple recipes do you suggest for the beginners like me?

    • Rosario, welcome to JOJ and thanks for your comment! You can use any recipe that you like. Also feel free to experiment and try your own recipes. A great simple recipe for beginners is

      2 Apples
      1/2 Lemon
      1 inch Ginger
      4 Stalks Celery
      1 Handful of Spinach
      1 Cucumber

Let me know how you like it. I’m here if you have any questions.

  22. Thanks Donnie. Also, I do know the difference between loose and lose. :-) Right now I am on a serious sugar addiction – especially chocolate (I quit drinking wine). This will be a challenge for me. My worst time is bedtime – it’s become a bad habit to snarf down chocolate chip granola bars. I do want to do this. My other problem will be not having coffee. I only drink that in the morning but I am not looking forward to the lack of energy or the headaches that will come from coffee withdrawal.

    • Deb, replace your coffee with tea. Stay away from black tea as it’s loaded with caffeine. The green tea will still have caffeine but it’s a good place to start. It’s also okay to take ibuprofen or tylenol for headaches.

  23. I am going to attempt juicing again, starting on Tues. I have to go buy the stuff on Monday. Last time I tried, I couldn’t get through noon I was so HUNGRY. I couldn’t get food off my mind. I really need to loose weight. I sure hope I can get through it this time. I’d like to try the 7 day fast. Fingers crossed I can manage it this time.

    • Congrats on deciding to start you juice fast Deb! There’s a difference between hunger and a craving. Once you can understand the two it makes it easier. Hunger is when your body is telling you it needs nutrients and cravings are when your mind tells you to eat out of habit. When you get hungry just have a juice, it will load you up with the nutrients your body needs and wants. Just push those cravings aside and stick to your fast Deb. It does take some will power but you can do it. I’ll be here if you have any questions.

  24. Great site, starting tomorrow morning, don’t know if I’m strong willed enough, but I’ve got all the info I need from here. Hope to report back in 30 days!

    • Martin, you are strong enough to do this. Just set your goals and don’t let anything get in the way! Keep me posted.

  25. So happy to have found your site! My husband and I have set July 1st as our “Start date” since we have a trip scheduled at the end of this month. We have borrowed his brother’s Vitamix, but we’ve tried the Blendtec and are watching the web for a deal on one. My daughter has our juicer, which was such a pain to clean that I gave up in a couple of days the last time I tried:( Thanks for the recipes! I’ve only had Dr. Oz’ Green Drink, and didn’t think I could keep that up on a long term basis. You’ve given us great ideas and I can’t wait to try them. I have heart, kidney, and joint issues, as well as 100 lbs. to lose. My husband is “the picture of health” but has a few lbs. to lose, but will support me in my efforts until I get established with a routine. Can’t wait to get more updates from your site. Thanks, again, for all you work on this!

    • Momma G. I wish you the best of luck in your future juice fast. One think you will need to understand is that a blender wont work. You need an actual juicer if you want this to work out for you. Some juicers can be a pain to clean. I suggest you take a look at the juicers listed here ( http://www.justonjuice.com/juicers ) as they are very easy to clean, work perfectly, and are priced for any budget. I use all of them but usually stick with the Hamilton Beach one. I’ll be here if you have any questions Momma G!

  26. My husband and I want to start juicing but we don’t have a juicer we have a Ninja system that has blender cups like the magic bullet system. Do you know if it is possible to use this to juice or will we need to buy a juicer.
    Thank you for your help

    • April, you will need to by a juicer. Any type of blender will not work as they do not separate the fibers and only blend it all together. Please read the FAQ on the differences between blenders and juicers and you’ll see why a blender will not work. Thanks for your comment.

  27. No I hadn’t tried cucumber, I will remember that thnx

  28. I’m on day 6 of my mainly green juice fast, I have been eating 1 banana a day as I need to take medication with food.
Day 5 and 6 have been my hardest so far, I have fibromyalgia and the body is feeling tired and the fibro is trying flare up.
I’m not sure how long I’m going to solely juice for, maybe til,day 10 then I will bring in one meal a day of vege and salad.
It’s so good to have some energy and a clear head, with fibromyalgia you get brain fog , but so far so good.
    I’m enjoying reading your website…
How many litres or ounces of juice,is recommend everyday? And how much water should we be drinking?

    • Wendy, thanks for the comment and congrats on day 6! I typically suggest you drink 4-6 juices per day each consisting of between 16 and 20 ounces. So the safe range would be between 64 and 120 ounces of juice per day. Different bodies will react better to different amounts. That’s why I always say to have a juice when you’re hungry.

Instead of a banana have you tried a cucumber?

  29. I stumbled upon this website a few minutes ago; I googled juicing and you came up and boy am I glad you did! you just answered all my questions and concerns within 5 minutes! The only question I do have is exactly what type of apparatus do I use to make the Juices? I have a magic bullet at home as well as a blender but I’m not sure if this is the correct item to use to juice. Please help! Thank you again for all your benefiting tips!!! amazing!

    • Gretta, I’m happy you found JustOnJuice! As far as what you need to get juice, take a look at this article ( http://www.justonjuice.com/juicers ) to see what you need to look for in a juicer. I have three really good juicers at the bottom of the page for you to compare. I’ll be here if you have any questions Gretta!

  30. Thank you for your blog. I’m starting my fast on Monday, and i’m both scared and excited

    • Matina, congrats on taking that step and starting your juice fast! That’s the hardest part of it all. It’s so exciting to start a juice fast for the first time but don’t let it scare you. Just remember you will go back to solids and you can do a few days or weeks of juicing. Just set your goal and set your mind to do it from start to finish. You can do this Matina! I’ll be here if you have any questions or need some motivation!
