To Peel or NOT to peel?
on: May 15, 2013, 14:07

I'm new at juicing. Some of the recipes call for peeled or un-peeled lemons and limes, however, I am uncertain if I should peel the oranges. Also, when preparing the fruits and veggies, what parts should be trimmed and left on?

Carrots & celery - leave the leafy greens on or cut them off?
Oranges - peel or not? I've heard most of the nutrients are in the peel.
Apples- de-core? I thought most of the nutrients are in the core.

Thanks!
=)

Lindsey, I usually don't juice the orange peels as it makes the juice super bitter. As far as carrots and celery I don't peel carrots, and I do juice the leafy greens on the celery.

Apples are another thing. It's okay to juice the stem and the core, but not the seeds. The seeds do contain small traces of cyanide. In small doses this won't have an impact on you but I still prefer to de-core the apples.

Let's keep further responses in this thread http://www.justonjuice.com/forum/justonjuice-forum-group1/general-juicing-forum1/peel-or-not-to-peel-thread33/

Thanks for your question!

I also just made the mistake and did not peel my lemon for the warm lemon juice first thing this morning. It was bitter but I did drink it all. Note to self in the morning - peel the lemon!

Yeah, lemon peels and orange peels can be very bitter. I usually include a little bit of lemon peel but not much.

Definitely peel the grapefruit. I've tried with and without the peel and it's very bitter with the peel on. I usually peel most fruits with rinds such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes. If it's a fruit with skin such as an apple, pear, peach, etc, it's safe to leave those on.
