7 day juice fast to begin 7/5
on: July 3, 2013, 02:00

Hello all!
I am new to the community, but have been interested in juice fasting for quite a while. I have started several juice fasts, only to break after the first day or two. I am a 5'6" female college student, weighing a healthy 126 lbs, but I have started to notice myself developing intense food addictions and compulsions, and the number on the scale has begun to climb up... I want to stop this now! I think a lot of these tendencies have ties to a mild depression that I have slumped into with the start of summer vacation and the end of a serious relationship (which caused a ten pound weight loss, followed by a very rapid gain).
My largest downfalls are sugary carbs and those tasty but empty bread calories. I believe the only way to get away from these now-daily cravings is to totally abstain for at least a week.
I have a few concerns: I am extremely active. I like to run at least 40 minutes a day/4 days a week, and do a ballet barre workout at least an hour a day, six days a week. I know that I will need to cut back on the cardio during the fast, but was hoping to hear that exercise does not need to be totally avoided during the week. Would appreciate any feedback about appropriate exercises!
Also - really looking forward to anyone willing to participate alongside and post here as encouragement. I find the biggest challenge I face during these kinds of cleanses is willpower, so having a support group is particularly vital for me...
Does anyone keep journals during their fast?
Thanks so much!

Hello Hiheyhello! Juicing will work to help you with the food addictions. Some things you used to like don't even taste appetizing after a fast.

It's okay to be active while on a juice fast. I suggest that you juice veggies that are high in protein such as spinach, kale, and romaine lettuce. Making sure you have enough protein in your diet helps to give you the balance you need for an active lifestyle.

I will participate with you on your fast. I won't be able to go a full seven days but I can do the first 4 days without a doubt! Looking forward to it!

"Willpower is essential to the accomplishment of anything worthwhile." Keep this in mind while on your fast!

I was 212 lbs before I started juicing, today I am 185 lbs and feel better than I did 10 years ago!

Hooray! Thank you both, I am really looking forward to the challenge (and its rewards!) I am cutting out sugar today and tomorrow and sticking to raw fruits and veggies and maybe a simple carb (rice) tomorrow for preparation! I will let you know how I am doing as it goes along. Thanks for such a great site and forum =)

Hi there. I recently started looking into juicing as I've fallen into some pretty bad dietary habits, including compulsively eating when I'm not at all hungry. I'm generally very active, but I've also been feeling rather fatigued lately. Anyway, I'd like to recalibrate, lose some of the weight that I've put on, plus I'm hoping to regain some energy and maybe even see a little bit of improvement in my skin.

I juiced for a couple of days about a week ago but I had to blend my greens with coconut water, then strain them because my juicer wouldn't juice them. Just shot shredded kale out the back. I don't know if, even when strained, that was still too much fiber? I borrowed a friend's Jack LaLane juicer, so I think it will handle the greens for this round. Is coconut water okay to add in? What about aloe juice? I am definitely starting this fast tomorrow, but I may only be able to go 5 days due to upcoming items on my calendar. Biggest fear...no coffee! :(

Laurel, welcome to JOJ and thanks for your comment! Coconut water is okay to add in but remember, it's best to not add anything to your juices and just drink them fresh. Coconut water is fine to drink on the side but limit how much you are drinking. Same thing with the Aloe juice.

Coffee was hard for me to break too. But I broke my coffee habit before I fasted. I switched to tea and it was the best thing prior to my fast that I could have done. The tea gave me more energy and it lasted longer. No ups and downs with the tea either, it was just straight energy and it was great. You can still have tea on your fast but I'd try to limit it to mostly decaf or white teas. It's okay to have a glass or two throughout the day and then maybe some night time tea to help you sleep.

I'll be here if you have any questions.

Hello I started my juice fast yesterday. I plan on doing at least 30 days. I did a 7 day juice fast a couple of months ago. Just wanted to say good luck to all of you who are starting your juice fast today. Come here often to post and read the posts. It truly helps keep me motivated and hopefully it will do the same for you.

Started today!
For breakfast:
Grapefruit, apple, lemon, kiwi, carrot

For lunch:
Kale, spinach, celery, apple, parsley, mint, cucumber, lemon

I helped a friend move (into a four-story walk-up...) so I am feeling pretty drained. A few pangs of hunger before my lunch juice, but I am feeling great right now. I also pre packaged my juice recipes for the rest of the day and found the whole process extremely cathartic - I really love working with all of this fresh produce! I am lucky enough to live two blocks away from a fantastic market, so I plan to stock up on all of my veggies for the day after my morning walk with the dog. Attached a few photos.

Keep posting Debi, it helps alot! Those are great pics Hiheyhello! I love looking at member pics so keep them coming! I just had a pink lemonade juice. I take 2 golden delicious apples, 3/4 Lemon, and about 5 chunks of watermelon. It's a great sipping juice if you pour it over ice. Tastes just like pink lemonade but better!

Is this where the "action" is now that the 3-day JF is over? :) LOL, I'm on day 4 and will probably continue on tomorrow too. Thanks for the great site here. And I like the sound of some grapefruit so thank you for mentioning that above, hiheyhello. It is starting to feel like a luxury to be able to choose our produce. I really recommend pineapples and peaches with the morning drinks (and greens and ginger of course). It tastes like a sherbet punch that's often served at baby or bridal showers. I add a little shake of crushed mint. Good luck, everyone!

For a snack try making one of these:

Orange Soda Juice
---------------------
2 Oranges
1 Carrot
Pour over ice and enjoy!

Pink Lemonade Juice
---------------------
2 Golden Delicious Apples
3/4 Lemon
2-3 Cups Watermelon
Pour over ice and enjoy!

Either of these are great summertime juices to casually sip and enjoy.

Hi all. I've had some hunger pangs today, but they have passed. I wish that I could say the same for this headache. :( I think I'm going to try some of that "lemonade." Sounds yummy! I know that ginger (not in that recipe, I know) has a lot of great properties, but I just don't like it. It's a very overpowering flavor, even when I just use a little. Any other options that might provide similar benefits?

Laurel, it's okay to leave out the ginger. All fruits and veggies have wonderful and great properties so don't feel bad by leaving out the ginger. It's a very overpowering flavor that you either like or don't like. As far as the headaches, you can take Tylenol or Ibuprofen if it helps.

Day one went really well! I definitely had insane cravings during the later part of the day, but after that pink lemonade (so tasty!) and a ginger, celery, apple, pineapple juice, I went to bed feeling pretty good.
I have been drinking as much water as possible, but I still was 2 pounds lighter today than I was yesterday morning.

Woke up extremely hungry, weak, and tingly this morning! After a walk with the dog I had a mango, carrot, tomato, and beet juice. I am working a full shift today and am a bit nervous as we are expecting temperatures in the high 90's. Just wondering if anyone has any experiences with feeling faint, and what to do if that happens (should I eat raw fruit/vegetables or just have a juice?) I work on my feet all day, but will try to take it easy.

I am so proud of myself for sticking with it even for a day. My SO brought home a burrito and tacos last night, and normally I would have gobbled that up with abandon. The feeling of having self control is wonderful, and I hope to continue that even after the cleanse!

Hi all. I'm planning to start a juice fast tomorrow. I would like to do a 7 day fast, but I may have to attend a work dinner on Thursday night which may cut the fast short. Wasn't sure if I should start a new thread or just post here since this is already going? Anyway, off to buy my fruits & Veggies shortly. I'm really looking forward to this.

Hiheyhello, if you get a little weak it's a sign that your body is going through detox. It will pass. If you feel hungry make sure and have a juice. I know what you mean by the heat. It's been above 115 here for the past two weeks! It gets into the low 90's at night and it's still hot! Just keep cool, try to relax as much as possible and don't do anything to physically drain yourself.

Jen, congrats on deciding to start your fast and welcome to JOJ! If you have to eat, try to keep it as healthy as possible and then get back to your fast. Eating will take you out of the fast but if you keep it healthy it will have minimal effects if you eat lite and healhty.

I'll be here if you have questions!

HiHeyHello,I feel you with that taco thing. I just made it through Costco without having any of the samples! I loved that pink lemonade juice. So did my kids. Actually, they've liked almost all of the juices I've made, so I had to buy extra produce so they wouldn't drink all of my "food."

Had a morning Glory for breakfast (Oranges instead of apples), it was delicious. My juicer made almost 30oz so I saved some for a snack later. Looking forward to the Bruschetta Tang for a late lunch. Got a late start this AM so breakfast wasn't until 11:30am :) I did a bunch of prep yesterday, but still found it took a while to get everything ready, juiced and cleaned this morning. I'm going to have to allocate a good amount time tomorrow since I'll be taking juice to work with me. I'm sure I'll get the hang out it. How is everyone else doing?

Laurel, that's funny. I often get extra produce so my boys can enjoy a juice or two also. Not only can you make some fantastic juices for children, it's a great way to ensure they are getting some good nutrition in addition to their daily diets.

Jen, the Morning Glory is a great breakfast drink! Oranges give it a little more sugar but such a wonderful taste to it! You'll eventually get into a routine and the time you spend juicing will be minimal.

Today is day three for everyone who started on the 5th! Good luck and congratulations for making it this far!

Ending up day three here, so far so good! Hunger pangs are becoming less, and my energy was much greater than yesterday. I was out and about a lot today, but managed to find two organic juice bars to fuel up at while running errands. About to make the green giant recipe to finish up the day! I have very noticeably lost weight, but I have been doing some very low impact (weightless) strength training which may also be contributing to that. I think my body is just so shocked by the absence of fat/sugar!

So after surviving Costco yesterday without sampling, my roommate decided to order the UFC fight last night and have friends over, complete with beer, pizza and snacks. I decided it was a good day to call it an early night and retreated to my room. So my willpower seems to be holding and my hunger is subsiding (still some occasional headaches), but the thought of prepping more produce right now just sounds exhausting. I go back to work tomorrow, so I plan to bag most of my meals tonight and juice them quickly in the morning. Go day 3!

Laurel, that's great that you were able to resist the temptations of beer, pizza, and snacks! I'm proud of you! Keep it up and you'll reach your goals sooner than you think. After the first 5 days of my fast I put myself to the test and took my boys to the mall. It was tempting seeing and smelling all of the food but after testing myself like that, I was able to go anywhere and do anything without letting food get in the way of me having fun.
