5 Day Fast Starting June 6
on: June 6, 2013, 02:16

As part of my ongoing experiment with "intermittent fasting," I plan to start a 5 day fast tomorrow.

I've found that I don't follow through well if I don't publicly announce my intentions, so I am here for some accountability. I would love it if anyone wanted to join me at this random part of the week, but I will be here posting about the experience at least once a day. Reading about everyone else's experiences really helps to keep me motivated while doing this, so hopefully this will help someone else. I know it'll help me!

Thanks Donnie! It's good to be back...I've been craving that feeling of lightness that I get with juicing. Also, it's hotter than Hades here, supposed to be 107 by Sunday, so I figure chilled juices and a lot of water might be a really good thing through the weekend. Just so long as I can get through the hunger...and of course we know I can. (With a lot of complaining!)

I'm starting my day with lemon water and a breakfast juice concoction of carrots, tomato, green leaf lettuce and basil from my garden, pineapple and an orange. Not bad. Pineapple really does go a long way! When I get done here I'll go back to the kitchen and make 3 or 4 more juices to take with me to work.

Here goes! I'm looking forward to a lighter, slimmer me next week. :-)

I'll have to start using more pineapple. I haven't used it in a while but it has such a great flavor and you don't have to use a whole bunch of it either.

I love pineapple...especially in the summer heat. I'm thinking about juicing some and freezing it to make popsicles...both for during AND after my fast.

Anyway, made it through day 1. I think this was my easiest day 1 yet, maybe because I knew what to expect, and maybe because I'm just way better at concocting juices now. I was, as usual, hungry (yes, HUNGRY...stomach growling, the works!) most of the day, but I was able to more or less ignore it and power through. Had a busy day at work, a decent workout at the gym, and all of my juices were yummy. I did have some serious cravings after my dinner juice so I went ahead and had dessert: apricots (from my tree), pineapple, carrot and orange. Delicious!

Now I'm hungry again but done for the day, so I'm looking forward to breakfast. See you tomorrow!

Laura, it's always good to read your posts! The apricots, pineapple, carrot, and orange really does sound tasty! I'll have to go get some pineapple. That's one thing I don't keep stocked that much. Have a great night and I'm looking forward to hearing how your day goes on day 2! Keep it up, you're doing great as always!

Good morning! Today is a day off, so I slept in a little before getting up and doing chores. Had my lemon water before feeding the horses, and now I'm enjoying my breakfast juice. I added a cucumber from my garden (I picked about 5 lb of them yesterday, and only because I couldn't carry more)...the cucumbers have been pretty bitter, which is helped by rubbing the ends, but my magical pineapple disguised any residual bitterness.

Heading off to physical therapy in a little bit...depending on how I feel, I might go to the gym too, before coming home and taking it easy for the rest of the day. Have a great day, everybody!

That's funny you mention rubbing the ends together. All throughout my life I've been rubbing the ends together and never knew why. It was just something I saw my family do as I was growing up and figured that's just what you had to do. So now I know haha!

I had to google the cucumber thing. But I found it several places, and many times people would say that they did it because that's what their grandmothers did. I'd never seen it, but it sure beats throwing out bitter cucumbers. On the other hand, I'd never even had a bitter cucumber before last year!

Anyway, today was difficult. I was HUNGRY all day...both real hunger and cravings. It is nice to be able to tell which is which, but it's still no fun. On the bright side, though, all my juices tasted great. I also bought a set of ice pop makers at BB&B, and made some popsicles out of a pineapple-orange-carrot-cabbage juice that I like for snacks. Tasty!

Yeah, all my relatives have done that since I can remember. I never thought to ask just did it myself. Now I know haha!

The ice pops work great for a snack. Try strawberry, orange, and carrot. It's very delicious as a Popsicle.

I love strawberry-orange-carrot! I haven't been out to my strawberry source lately, though. We have a little farm way on the other side of town that grows strawberries and harvests and sells them same day. They're incredibly delicious, red all the way through unlike the store-bought versions...I've gotten spoiled and can only eat strawberries from there. That might be something I need to do today!

Funny how on a juice fast I always wake up feeling great, and stepping on the bathroom scale in the morning always helps with motivation. It sure gets harder as the day goes on, but for now I'll enjoy it. I'm finishing up my breakfast juice, doing some chores, and then I'll head to the gym with a protein-spiked post-workout juice in a cooler. I won't get another day off for a while, so I'd better enjoy this one.

Have a great day!

Hungry again this evening...but maybe that's okay. Had a great workout this morning, and some really tasty juices during the day. My lunch juice was particularly good and refreshing:

2 baby bok choy
1 big hunk of red cabbage (maybe 1.5 cups)
1/2" slice pineapple
3 large carrots
2 lemon cucumbers (from my garden)
1 orange

It had a really nice salty/sweet taste, and reminded me Chinese chicken salad dressing. Yum.

Back to work tomorrow, but that mostly just means being on call. It's also ONLY supposed to be 100 degrees tomorrow, as opposed to 110 today. Cold juice has really been a pleasant way to go this weekend. Three days down, two to go...I think I'm going to manage to get through this just fine. :-)

Day 4...still feeling strong. Didn't sleep well last night, so this afternoon might be a bear, but I'll manage. Have a great day!

Picked up some pineapple today along with some apricots and a few other things. Going to try out a few things that you posted above. I'll let you know how they turn out!

I had an interesting, if somewhat unpleasant experience yesterday. Went to the gym, had a great workout, and afterward snarfed down a big purple juice with protein powder that I'd stored in a cooler. It was cold and delicious, and I was hungry and thirsty. Unfortunately, though, I didn't have very much water with me...just what was left in the bottle from my workout and one frozen water bottle in my cooler. So within about 15 minutes I went from still feeling hungry to suddenly feeling quite queasy. Water intake is normally not a problem for me...I'm quite famous for drinking all the time and having multiple bottles of water with me. (I work outside, in Bakersfield, CA, and I don't like getting sick!) But the one time I didn't, it had rather unpleasant consequences. It took quite a while to shake that queasy feeling, and the rest of the day I was just kind of "sick" of juice. But I got through it, and will juice one more day today to finish out my 5 day fast.

Take home message of the day: Drink lots of water!

So I'm now enjoying my last breakfast juice of the fast: a nice little garden juice of lettuce, carrots, cucumber and cherry tomatoes from the garden along with apple, pineapple and orange for sweetness and kick. Yum. I'll go juice a few more to take to work with me, and then it'll be out into the heat. Shouldn't be nearly so bad today, though...only supposed to hit 90, for a nice change.

Have a great day, everybody! :-)

Wow, yeah, make sure you are always drinking enough water.

I did get some pineapple and tried including it in a few of my recipes. It turned out good! I forgot how just a little pineapple will go along way. It was delicious!

Pineapple is definitely good for the yum factor!

Yesterday was day 5, and it was probably my easiest day of juice fasting ever. We were crazy fun busy at work, so I really didn't have a chance to think about being hungry. I just grabbed a juice every time I had a chance to take a breather, which, including the drive home, happened to be exactly as many bottles of juice as I had packed. I didn't even have a chance to drink the bottles of yummy iced tea I'd brought along! Dinner was a clean-the-fridge juice, just using up what I had left. Beet, tomato, cucumber, a little pineapple and a lime...it was cool and refreshing, although not a recipe I'd make again for taste. I have to admit I did cheat while making that last juice...I ate one small lemon cucumber and a chunk of pineapple. Just couldn't help myself!

Just got done eating real food for breakfast, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'll see you back here in a week or two. :-)
