Hi,

I plan to start a 3 day juice fast on Monday. I'm buying all the ingredients tomorrow.

However, I don't have the budget just yet to buy a juicer.

Can I mix everything in a blender then strain out the fiber?

Thanks for the advice.

ParisSante, you can try to strain the juice but I think you will realize that it's very time consuming. You'll have to get a very thin nylon mesh cloth (nut milk bag) or a super fine cheese cloth. It will be like milking a cow.

I'm not sure what your budget is but you can get the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth juicer right now for $49.99 on sale at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beach-67601-Mouth-Extractor/dp/B002OF3FBK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1369511964&sr=8-4&keywords=hamilton+beach+big+mouth&tag=jus033-20

Good luck and let me know how it works out for you, I'll be here if you have any questions.

This is my second day. I plan to complete 7 days and then start a healthier eating routine from what I was doing before the fast. My question is how often should I go back to the juice fast?

Christina, welcome to JOJ and congrats on day 2! I usually do a juice fast for 3 days every other week. If you stick to 3-7 days once a month it will be very beneficial to you.

Re: The BIG JUICING FAQ
on: August 1, 2013, 02:11

My DH and I tried the first day and it was awful. We only got paid this morning, so we ended up not having the right balance of produce to really make this work. I had a headache 2 days prior to starting our fast, and it got so bad I couldn't handle being alone with the children.

DH wanted to get right back up and start tomorrow, but I backed out. I feel awful for letting him down, but I think our timing was bad.

Is there some sort of "middle ground" we can try?

I was thinking about easing into this a bit to get some practice by having juice replace my morning meal, then having juice for all snacks and before my other meals. I have a menu planned that includes portion-controlled seafood and lots and lots of steamed veggies and fresh fruit salads. I thought that way I could get more practice making the juice and cleaning up without having to totally rely on it. Plus, my husband has a busy lifestyle (military and softball) and I am concerned he won't be able to maintain a fast like this while keeping up with things he MUST be able to do.

My husband will be going TDY, and I wanted to really commit to a fast when he leaves. That way he can see my results when he gets back. *But honestly, that way I only have to worry about my juice and my needs while he is gone, instead of trying to run a whole home and make double the juice all day. The oldest will be in school 8 hours a day and the baby is easy to handle most of the time.*

Any advice would be appreciated. I was very disappointed with how today went. I made it from 5am-6pm about on the fast, but without enough juice to get us both by. I want to make this work, but I feel I need practice before doing an all out fast so I can keep up with juicing, my young children and housework.

We aren't as concerned with detoxing as we are with weight loss for me. DH is close to the proper weight, he just wants to fast to support me. (It ends up making more work on my part, though.)

Probably the worst thing about this is I told my DH I could not get up and try again tomorrow, and he's been disappointed in me. He thinks I'm making excuses, and I guess maybe I am. But I feel they are valid and I want to find ways to work around them instead of hiding behind them, but right now he's just shut down on the whole topic.

Skkubiz, if you want to have all the benefits of the fast, then you need to stick to the fast 100%. You can deviate the recipes a bit but the main thing is to not include solids while on the fast. If you do include solids you are taking yourself out of the fast.

If you want to ease into it, juice like normal (4-6 juices per day) and add in a meal or two consisting of fresh fruits and veggies. You want to limit your fruits as they contain the most sugar.

You have to understand that for the fast to work, you must detox. In order to start losing that weight you have to not only get rid of the toxins in your body, but stop including them in your daily diet. Stick to the fresh (uncooked) fruits and veggies to get you better acquainted with the juices.

Skkubiz, it's all worth it in the end when you see the weight fly off and you feel all the other benefits. People on the forum have lost anywhere from 5-30 pounds going 3-30 days. A big part of this is your will power to succeed. You can do this Skkubiz. With the proper planning and routine you will have no problem succeeding with your juice fast. Take your time and ease into it. You can do this! I'm here if you have any questions.

Good morning, I started this morning with my first juice, I have two ready in the fridge at work for my snack and lunch.

JustOnJuice, I have a few questions regarding weigh loss.
I have a bout 25 lbs. to lose, I have been reading here all the success stories of many Juicers have lost weight with Juice Fast, is it water weight that is being lost? or does one actually lose fat and inches?, I know that when I don't eat carbs. I lose weight, but it's mostly water weight and my body shape doesn't change or shrink much, I need to lose fat too, I need to lose 25 lbs. I want to fit confortably in my cloteh...lol
My next questions is, if I was to juice fast Monday - Friday and on the weekends eat a healthy dinner, would I lose weight if I did this for a month or so, or even for long term?
You have mentioned that you do a 3 day fast once a month, do you lose weight or just maintain your current weight?
Thank you again for always taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it.

best regards
Maryc

Mary, you'll lose a combination of water weight and fat. I went from a size 38 to a size 32. Your best bet is to fast until you hit your goal of 25 pounds and then do a 3-5 day fast every few weeks to ensure you are keeping healthy. You will lose more than just water weight Mary.

I'm here if you have questions.

Hi! I am getting to try a 3 day fast/cleanse and my main concern is that I no longer have a Thyroid (and 11 lymph nodes in that area) NOR do I have a Gall Bladder. I take levothyroxine for my thyroid and you say not to have any solids, but I HAVE to take my medicine every night (on an empty stomach). This won't interfere with anything will it? BTW....this is my first time juicing and cleansing and "eating" this much fruits and veggies. I haven't been able to digest salads without excruciating pain, so I don't usually eat raw veggies at all. Thanks for any input! :)

PS I bought an Omega VRT350HD Masticating juicer....was a little pricey, but it seems to handle the leafy greens well.

Whitewolf, simply take your meds right after your juice. You won't have an empty stomach if there's juice in it.

You have to understand that while you are on the fast you aren't digesting anything since juice is absorbed into your system. So there shouldn't be any pain from digestion. You will do great on your fast Whitewolf. Keep me posted and know that I'm always here if you have any questions.

Thank you for creating this site! Super-informative, and I appreciate that you take the time to respond to every post!
I, like others, watched the Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead documentary and that is where I found my inspiration... my parents just delivered my juicer (an early Christmas present), and my husband got paid today, so I intend to visit a few farm stands to see what I can find for the fast. My question is-- is it safe to do the juice fast long-term? How long did you do only juice? If I start on Sunday, will I be visiting the bathroom at work all day long on Monday?

Thank you!

You're very welcome Deggie. Also, welcome to JOJ! It really depends on how long you consider long term. I've seen people juice anywhere from 3 days to 100 days. If you're going longer than a month it may be in your best interest to notify your doctor so he/she can monitor you to ensure you are 100%.

My initial juice fast was for two weeks. I've been juicing just about every other week since then. You'll mostly have to urinate a lot, but just think that every time you do so, you are losing weight.

You'll do fantastic Debbie! Keep me posted on your status and good luck! I'm always here if you have any questions.

In reading your reply to Debbie...I'm so glad you said "you'll mostly have to urinate a lot," cause that's me! I thought would be running to bathroom for another reason :) I decided to start the 3 day fast yesterday (initially planned on starting today). So day 2 and doing good. Last night I had headache and cravings....didn't help watching husband eating burger either :/ Other than forgetting to put the spinach in the Gung Ho Mango recipe, I'm doing good today. It's becoming second nature to me now, routines are the best! I may go 7 days! And I will be of more help to my husband when he starts next Friday. He will be taking juices to work, do you have recommendations for containers to take them in? My goal is to fit in my football seats without the extra seat as a buffer, home opener is Aug 30th!

I'd be lost without this site. A HUGE thank you Donnie!

Ysette, congrats on starting your juice fast today! It's all about getting into a routine and listening to your body. I recommend you take them in airtight containers like mason jars or thermoses. I'm so glad you found the site helpful Ysette! Let me know if you have any questions.

I'm starting to smell :/ and developing a whitish tongue. Also have seasonal asthma and noticed my asthma a little irritated tonight but did inhaler and feel better. I read somewhere these were "healing crisis" and completely normal at beginning of juice fast. Any suggestions to minimize the odor?

Drink lots of water Ysette. That's the best thing you can do while on your fast right now. Toxins will find ways out of your body through urine, and also through your skin. Once you get through the detox period, it will get much better.

It's good to make them organic but it's not going to make or break your fast if you use organic. You can use conventional and get the same results Monica.

Thanks Donnie. I drink about 3-4 of a 32 oz water bottle during the day. Sometimes I feel water logged but keep on drinking! Skin getting oily now so I know cleanse is working. Going on Day 5. When I get to day 7, I will see how I feel and decide if I want to extend it. Since my husband is starting on Friday, I most likely will stretch it to 10 or 14 days. I weighed myself yesterday only to find I gained a pound :/ Discouraged. Then I had more symptoms of detox so yesterday was a down day. After today it should only get better so I am hopeful.

Don't trust your scale Ysette. Trust in how your clothes fit and how you feel about yourself. Your weight can fluctuate and it's best to weigh yourself first thing in the morning after you use the restroom and before you have your first juice of the day. Keep at it, only good things will come of it!

Welcome to JOJ Jankathleen! The magic bullet is great for making smoothies but won't work for a juice fast. I suggest you read this article as it explains why you need a juicer to juice and why a blender wont work.

http://www.justonjuice.com/can-i-use-a-blender-for-juicing/

Basically, a juicer will extract the juice and remove the fiber (pulp) leaving you with only juice. A blender only mixes everything together and it's really no different than just eating your fruits and vegetables raw. A juicer will also damage the cell walls which hold a majority of the enzymes and nutrients. This makes it so your juices are absorbed and not digested. When you use a blender, what you consume will still have to go through the digestive process. A juice fast works by allowing your digestive system to rest and cleanse while you absorb your nutrients allowing your body to cleanse and detox.

You'll also consume way more calories using a blender than a juice fast. So I suggest you read ( http://www.justonjuice.com/juicers ) so you know what to look for in a juicer when you buy one.

I'm sure you'll still lose a little weight if you make smoothies and stick to a raw plant based diet. But to get all the benefits of a juice fast, you'll need a juicer.

Keep me posted on your status and what you decide to do. I'm here if you have any questions Jankathleen.
